Obedient Plant

The pinkish-purple flower spikes of an Obedient Plant, a native perennial and excellent cut flower.

A Native Perennial with Personality

Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) gets its charming name because its individual flowers can be pushed to the left or right, and they will obediently stay in that position. It produces tall spikes of pinkish-purple, snapdragon-like flowers in late summer. It is a vigorous grower that fills in quickly to form a dense patch.

Why You Need It:

  • Fun Factor: Children love playing with the "obedient" flowers.
  • Late Summer Blooms: Bridges the gap between summer and fall flowers.
  • Pollinator Friendly: A favorite of bumblebees and hummingbirds.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Full Sun. It loves moisture but is adaptable. Warning: It spreads aggressively by underground rhizomes, so plant it where it has room to roam or in a contained area.
